Being locked out of your home is equal parts annoying, frustrating and upsetting. This means that you will be forced to miss your work or cleaning or whatever else productive you may have had planned for the day and to instead just sit or stand outside your home waiting for the emergency locksmith, it means that you will be late for any subsequent appointments or anything you had planned, and it means you will be bored and tired of just waiting outside.

Acting swiftly and correctly can minimise how disruptive this all is. If you are locked out and you want to get in safely and cheaply as quickly as possible then there are several things to do. Before you start trying to get into the lock though think about your appointments and arrangements and whether these need canceling – inform people that you might be late, and make arrangements for things like picking up the children from school. Spend some time consciously thinking about the potential problems and ensure you haven't forgotten anything.

The first is to check that you are indeed locked out. Is there another key you could use? Could you go to another lock? And is your key indeed broken/lost? If your key won't turn the lock then there are a few things you can try doing such as lifting the door slightly or pulling it while turning the key. If this doesn't work then you can try pushing the key upwards or downwards inside the lock in order to help the keys to engage. Also try dusting off the key or wiping it to remove any bits of dirt or dust which can often stop it working correctly (this is a particularly important strategy if you are locked out of a car, as small bits of dust can prevent the key from properly contacting with the electrics). Never force the key to turn however as you will risk breaking it so that the blade gets stuck in the lock.

If the key is lost rather than the lock broken then you should try calling around people that you know who have a spare key that you copied for them. If anyone lives near and isn't busy, then they will be able to bring you the key and let you in. If they are out then you may need another back up plan.

The next thing to do is to call an emergency locksmith. They will come and let you into your home by repairing the lock or replacing it and they will normally arrive within 30-40 minutes of your calling them. If you don't have the number of an emergency locksmith service in your phone, but you have a smartphone, then you can go online in order to retrieve that number and in order to call them from there.

While you wait for the locksmith service to arrive you should take some time out to relax, or find a way that you can be getting on with work – on your phone for example or by planning. Make sure you are nearby though so that you can instruct the locksmith when they arrive.
